Mt. Vernon Looking at Reentry Program
Rorye O'Connor reports on the prospects of a new reentry program in Mt. Vernon, Ill.
MT. VERNON — Jefferson County is currently without a program to help people coming out of jail to get their lives together, but that could change soon.
The Illinois Department of Corrections is examining the possibility of a southern Illinois office, according to Jefferson County Sheriff Roger Mulch, and Mt. Vernon is one of the places they’re considering. Because of this, Mulch said, the urge to create a re-entry program for those who have been incarcerated is growing.
The re-entry program, which would start as soon as former detainees are paroled, is meant to forestall recidivism by helping people to get jobs and support their families and themselves, Mulch said.
“About ninety percent of the (recidivism) problem is that they can’t get a job,” he said. “It would help a lot to have businesses where they can start people out, and if it doesn’t work, they can report to the Department of Corrections why.”
