Education

Studies show that the more education individuals with a criminal record have, the less likely they are to return to prison.

In Illinois, 75% of prison inmates have not completed high school. Understanding this, the Safer Foundation pioneered innovative educational programs designed specifically for individuals with a criminal record based on their educational needs, learning styles and past educational experiences.

Current educational programs include the Youth Empowerment Program, North Lawndale ATC Basic Skills and Crossroads Basic Skills, PACE Institute, Harvey Employment and Learning Center, Davenport Youth Empowerment Program (YEP) and  Rock Island YEP. In addition a new program was instituted in 2005 that serves the Latino Community - Caminos Mas Seguros/Safer PATHS. This program is a Safer Foundation - Instituto Del Progreso Latino Partnership. While the target clients and locations of these programs vary, they all share the common goals of increasing literacy, assisting clients to obtain a GED (General Equivalency Diploma) and teaching clients the life skills they need to succeed in the world of work. (For additional information on the importance of education see OSI's Research Brief: Education as Crime Prevention).
