In 1983 the Illinois Department of Corrections asked the Safer Foundation to assume responsibility for operating the then 60 bed Crossroads Community Correctional Center located on the fourth floor of the old Sears YMCA. Today, the Safer Foundation continues to manage the Crossroads ATC under contract to the IDOC. And now it is the largest ATC in Illinois housing 350 male residents with approximately 80 staff members.

When it assumed this responsibility, the Safer Foundation committed to provide the same range of programs and services to ATC residents as they did to other Safer clients -- while also meeting all security requirements -- because of Safer's fundamental belief in the value of structured support and skill building as a prerequisite to reducing recidivism rates.

Crossroads is accredited by the American Correctional Association and is one of the few facilities nationally to be awarded 100% ratings.
